Pastor’s Corner
March 2026
As I move forward in my life I find more and more value in looking back. There's so much to learn from church history and Christians from the past. What has stood the test of time? What connects us to the saints who came before? One repeated refrain that we find in every church age, in every language, in countless liturgies, is “Kyrie Eleison” meaning “Lord Have Mercy.” It is a prayer, a hope, a promise. It is found in the Psalms and the Gospels and we have evidence that Christians have sung it in worship services since at least the 2nd century. Probably the most referenced kyrie eleison is found in the gospel of Luke: But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ — Luke 18:13 A simple prayer that invokes all the truth of the gospel. God is God. We are sinners. We need His mercy. As we walk through this season of Lent we should meditate on these simple words: kyrie lleison. Lord have mercy. And then we should praise Him and thank Him because He does.
