Cahill Methodist Church is a local gathering of the body of Christ in Alvarado, Texas. We adhere to the ancient faith “that was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 1:3). Our historic, traditional, and orthodox faith is summarized in the Apostle's Creed, The Nicene Creed, and the Definition of Chalcedon. We stand firm on the foundations of Historic Protestantism. We are in line with the reformed tradition of the church and the doctrine and practice recovered in the Protestant Reformation. We affirm their convictions represented by the 5 Solas: Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, accomplished by the finished work of Christ alone, authoritatively communicated by Scripture alone, all for the Glory of God alone.
Cahill was founded in 1893 as Cahill Methodist Church. For our full history click here. We are Historically Methodist, but we have chosen to separate ourselves from the modern day First United Methodist denomination and its current cultural connotations. We still aim, like the original methodists of the 18th century, to live out our faith in our daily lives. We strive to live in obedience to the scriptures, to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, and to present our bodies as living sacrifices. The original methodists did not name themselves, but were called that by outsiders for the way in which they devoted themselves to living out their Christian faith in a “methodical” and intentional way. We retain this meaning of the Historic Methodism that is our heritage.
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
2 Peter 3:18 ESV
The historic, ecumenical creeds were written to be succinct, theological summaries of the Christian faith. When they were written they were agreed upon to be defenses of the historic, biblical faith against rising heresies of the day. We confirm them to be timeless statements of our faith and stand on them as a strong foundation uniting us to all Christians throughout history. Click here to read them
Historic protestantism is rooted in the protestant reformation of the 16th century, though reform of the church has been happening since its inception. Church fathers have been comparing the outworking of the church to scripture since the beginning. From Athanasius in the 4th century to John Wycliffe in the 14th there have been reformers calling the church to right doctrine and worship according to scripture. But with Luther’s 95 theses and the wave of reformation that followed the protestant church finds its origin. Confessions were written in an attempt to define the beliefs of these new protestant churches. Cahill Church is rooted in historic protestantism and our beliefs will mostly reflect those found in these historic confessions.
